इतिहास · Seventy years of the state bus
The road transport corporation is one of the few Indian institutions that reached every taluka before the railways did, and it is still how most of the country travels between towns. This is the shape of it, decade by decade — and because the bus and the music were never really separable, what was playing on board.
- 1950s · NATIONALISATION
The state takes the wheel
The Road Transport Corporations Act of 1950 hands intercity travel to the states — though Bombay’s own fleet had been running since 1948. Wooden-bodied Bedford and Chevrolet chassis reach towns the railways never did.
BOMBAY STATE RTC · MADRAS STATE TRANSPORT · BEST
Radio Ceylon on a valve set at the depot — the one station still playing film songs.
- 1960s · TATA & LEYLAND
The Indian chassis era
Tata and Ashok Leyland take over from imported chassis, and steel bodies replace wood. The long-bonnet silhouette stays — it will rule the mofussil road for another thirty years.
APSRTC · MYSORE SRTC · RSRTC
Vividh Bharati all day, and Ameen Sayani counting down Geetmala on Wednesday nights.
- 1970s · EXPANSION
Every taluka, every village
The states take notified routes outright and the network explodes. Long-distance night runs multiply, and the tin-roof bus stand with a chai stall becomes an Indian institution.
MSRTC · GSRTC · UPSRTC
The conductor’s transistor up front, held to the window whenever the signal thinned.
- 1980s · THE CLASSIC AGE
Lalpari and the Asiad
The red Lalpari rules Maharashtra. The 1982 Asian Games put a fleet of Asiad coaches on Delhi’s roads and set a new comfort standard. Drivers hang marigolds on chrome grilles.
MSRTC · KSRTC · TNSTC
Cassette decks. The driver picks the tape, and the whole bus listens to it.
- 1990s · SEMI-LUXURY
Video coaches & deluxe runs
Private “video coach” operators compete with state deluxe services. 2×2 seating, tinted glass, and a TV bolted above the driver.
KSRTC RAJAHAMSA · SETC · HRTC DELUXE
One film for everyone, all night — and the driver’s own cassette on the morning run. This is the decade the road outside is set in.
- 2000s · AC REVOLUTION
Volvo changes everything
The Volvo B7R arrives in 2001; Shivneri and Airavat follow in 2003. Air suspension and AC become the new intercity baseline.
MSRTC SHIVNERI · KSRTC AIRAVAT
CD changers, then a pen drive of MP3s handed across the dashboard at the depot.
- 2010s · MULTI-AXLE
Sleeper coaches & apps
Multi-axle coaches, online booking and live tracking. The night bus becomes a rolling hotel across the Deccan.
AIRAVAT CLUB CLASS · GARUDA · SCANIA METROLINK
An AUX cable swinging from the dash, then Bluetooth — the playlist stops being the driver’s.
- TODAY · ELECTRIC
Silent ghats ahead
Electric buses hum through city routes and hill routes alike. GPS dashboards, but the marigolds stay on the mirror.
E-SHIVAI · SWITCH · HRTC ELECTRIC
A phone, a pair of earphones, and the whole playlist at once. This one.
